Tablecloth Dresses

Tablecloth Dresses

My grandmother's account of living in the U.S.A. during World War II inspired me to paint this little painting of how I imagine what those tablecloth dresses might have looked like.

"
I could not buy yardage and clothing.  We made underwear out of cloth flour bags if we could get them.  I cut up a tablecloth and made two little dresses for my little girls."

Another Gift

The Hair Artist 2 The Hair Artist

Here is another painting of a friend of mine.  She is certainly a hair artist.  I love how safe she is being with her scissors and those bobby pins are huge!  I wonder what ingenious hair style is coming to her mind.

Rebekah

Piece of Cake 2Piece of Cake

When you are such a prima ballerina, eating a piece of cake while on pointe is, well, a piece of cake.

Our very talented friends, the Hales, both perform in The Phantom of the Opera together every night here in Las Vegas.  Ben is a back up for all of the male parts excluding Mr. Phantom, and the lovely Rebekah is the lead ballerina in the performance.  They were generous enough to slip us some tickets!  Yes, it was a great performance, but my favorite was just seeing them up there.  So here is Rebekah!  The original was her thank you from me, but there is a cute little print up in my etsy shop!

Oh how all the girls wish he would study them the way he studies those big books of his.

This painting is of someone special to me.  I still get jealous when his hands are on a book.

Gloria, Harold and Petunia

Ba;ljdiow 018 Twelve years ago I took my first watercolor class from fancy pants landscape watercolor artist, Roland Lee.  I bought all of the brushes and paint colors that he suggested.   Over the years I have figured out what I like to use.  A lot of my fancy fan brushes have been put away.  Now I only use Big Gloria, Harold and Petunia (in fact, it may be time to put little Petunia away as well.)  Also, I never buy raw or burnt sienna for my colors.  Alright, I probably do have a sienna in there, but my point is I buy colors that I like and not the earthy tones just because they were on the list.

I wanted to show my brushes and paints since maybe a lot of people think of the little rectangular open and close kits we used as kids in school when they think of watercolors.  "Grown up" watercolors are actually concentrated paint packaged in nice little tubes.

Side Story:  I was the worst in Mr. Lee's class.  There is absolutely no modesty or low self confidence here.  Everyone else was painting shadowed mountains and snowy scenes...I painted a little 2D house.  I am not saying "Look at me now!"  since I still can't paint a tree or mountain to save my life.

It's amazing how a monocle, cane and feather can make you feel so dapper.
